Natural remedy to cure gastric ulcer?

First of all, and probably your mother has already done this, but she should make SURE this is an ulcer and not some other kind of abdominal pain by having an GI series or endoscopy done. She can ask her primary care physician to do this.

So if it is definitely a gastric ulcer... In many cases, if it is something that chronic, it could be an undiagnosed food allergy that's constantly aggravating the ulcer. I'd suggest getting a full range of food allergens tested. If that's the cause (or one of them), it would help the symptoms significantly to eliminate all traces of that food from the system. However, that many not be enough even if an allergy is the original cause, so there are some other dietary steps you can take:

High-fiber foods (and fiber supplements) have been known to relieve these ulcers somewhat. Also, and this sounds kind of gross but is actually not nearly as disgusting as it may seem... raw cabbage juice. There are TONS of studies that show this to have a remarkable effect. (According to "Natural Living" you should take 1 liter a day, interspersed throughout the day.) Bananas also are known to heal the intestinal lining (this would relieve the ulcers as well).

AVOID hot foods (with any hot peppers in them), garlic, and any food with a very high vitamin C content: this irritates the lining and worsens the ulcer.

Gastric ulcer and Barrett's Esophagus?

Barrett's Esophagus is a condition whereby there is a change of the lining of the esophagus where it meets the stomach. This can been observed by the gastroenterologist when he/she scopes you, but can only be definitively diagnosed after pathologic examination of the cells (from biopsies that should have been taken). What is seen microscopically is a change in the normal type of cells in the esophagus to a type of cell seen more commonly in the stomach (sqamous cells become glandular/columnar cells).

Barrett's Esophagus is not cancer. It is not even pre-cancer (or carcinomat in-situ). It is a RISK FACTOR for developing esophageal cancer. Many sites that you read will overstate this risk. The risk of developing esophageal cancer for those with Barrett's Esophagus is estimated at 0.5% per year in any individual. (In the US, more recent studies have lead some to believe the risk is even lower than this, although it may be slightly higher in other countries.) The lifetime risk of developing esophageal cancer is very difficult to assess as I am not aware of any great long term data on this. Previously number around 20-25% lifetime risk were assumed, but now most suggest the risk is much lower than this. With routine surveillance, the hope is that in the few individuals who do develop cancer it will be found early and easily treated.

Despite all this scary talk of esophageal cancer, there are also some papers out there that note the mortality rates and life expectancies of individuals with Barrett's are no different than that of the general population.

What foods are bad and foods that are good for gastric ulcer?

Diet
Diets for patients with gastric ulcers are more focused on what foods to avoid, rather than outlining a diet plan. A bland diet with little to no spicy or acidic foods is ideal if you have a gastric ulcer.

Milk
Milk and other calcium containing products soothe the stomach, but creams should be avoided because of their high fat content that can cause an increase in acid production.

Fiber
Gradually increase your fiber intake, but avoid fruits and vegetables with the skin still on them. The increase in soluble fiber helps protect the already sensitive stomach lining.

Harmful Foods
Avoid foods that are overly spicy, have a lot of citrus content or are high in acid, such as tomato and tomato sauces.

Harmful Beverages
Alcohol, caffeine and fruit juices can upset the acid balance, making the ulcer worse.

Science is still guessing on this; wait for the test results. Good Luck.

What is the best way to detect a peptic or gastric ulcer?

An endoscopy or gastroscopy is the best way.

A CT scan won't show up any ulcers.
A barium swallow will only show up any hernia's or reflux.
A colonoscopy will only show up problems in the bowel.

There are heaps of videos on YouTube that show a gastroscopy and ulcers in the gut.
